The French Vexin at a glance
The Vexin is countryside: small villages and large fields between the Oise valley and the Seine valley. Much of it lies inside the Vexin français regional nature park. A regional nature park is not a national park. People live and farm there, and you visit it village by village, on foot, by bike or by car.
The Vexin is not the same area as the Val-d'Oise department. Some places on this page are in the Val-d'Oise, others sit on the Seine hillsides around La Roche-Guyon. For a day trip from Paris, plan two stops at most. Distances between villages are longer than they look on the map.

The Vexin regional nature park: stops and tips
What you can see, and what to know before you set out.
Théméricourt: the museum and the Maison du Parc
The Musée du Vexin français is housed in the outbuildings of the Château de Théméricourt. It charges admission. The Maison du Parc is free and keeps its own hours, so do not apply its hours to the museum. The park around the château covers 6 ha.
Guiry-en-Vexin: the archaeological museum
The Musée archéologique du Val d'Oise is a short visit that pairs easily with Théméricourt. Visitors with a disability and their companion enter free. The museum belongs to the Pass des 5 lieux, with the Château d'Auvers, the Maison du docteur Gachet, Maubuisson Abbey and the Musée de l'outil. The annual pass costs €30 solo, €45 for two and €68 for a family if you do not live in the department (as of July 24, 2026).
Villarceaux: park and châteaux
The estate at Chaussy has 70 ha of park and two groups of buildings: the Château du Haut from the 18th century and the lower group from the 16th century. The gardens and the Château du Haut are open during the 2026 cultural season. Guided tours run by reservation, and free weekend tours need advance registration. An open garden does not mean every interior is open, and not every show or escape game is free.
The Coteaux de la Seine
The national nature reserve covers 268 ha of Seine hillsides around Vétheuil, Haute-Isle, La Roche-Guyon, Gommecourt and Bennecourt. From March 1 to June 30, climbing the rock pinnacles at Haute-Isle is strictly forbidden. That is not a closure of every path in the reserve. A visit to the Château de La Roche-Guyon pairs well with a walk on these slopes.
Walking: maps and hunting
The park's hiking portal offers routes on a map. Check the route and the path condition on the ground before you set out. In the La Roche-Guyon regional forest, the 2026/2027 hunting season began on October 13. On some Tuesdays and Thursdays until March, signed sectors are restricted, and rabbit hunting can take place on weekends in one lot. Stay on the paths, keep your dog on a leash and avoid marked sectors. Do not confuse this forest with the state forest of L'Isle-Adam.
The Vexin is best seen through its landscapes. Bring sturdy shoes, water and a map, and check how you reach each village in advance. The getting there page covers the train lines, but service to small villages varies.

French Vexin: frequently asked questions
Is the French Vexin a national park?
No. It is a regional nature park, an inhabited area where farming and villages remain. It does not have the strict protection of a national park, except in specific zones such as the Coteaux de la Seine reserve.
Is the Vexin the same as Val-d'Oise?
Not exactly. The French Vexin covers part of the Val-d'Oise and extends into other departments. The nature park and the department do not overlap exactly.
How much is the Musée du Vexin français?
Admission is €4, €2 reduced and free under 5 (2026 prices). The museum is closed on Mondays and for all of December.
Can you visit Villarceaux in winter?
The estate's 2026 cultural season runs from April 4 to November 1. For late-year hours, check the estate's calendar before you come.
Can you climb the rocks at Haute-Isle?
Not from March 1 to June 30, when access to the rock pinnacles is strictly banned. The rest of the year, follow the signs on site.
